Bears top Rams

Published October 2, 2008

SYLVANIA—The Bears extended their regular season winning streak to four games with a 28-13 win over their rival Sylvania in a non-region matchup on the road Friday night.

Plainview (4-1) tallied over 400 yards of total offense during the contest but was hindered by several infractions, finishing the night with 90 yards in penalties.

"Our effort was there, we just had too many penalties," said Bears head coach Dale Pruitt. "We can't come out and do that. Sylvania gave a great effort and had a good scheme. It was one of those backyard brawls."

The Rams, which accounted for only 170 yards of total offense, struggled for the majority of the night, closing with four punts and two turnovers.

"Plainview is a good team," said Sylvania head coach Alan Clayton. "Our communication was off. We made some mistakes."

Following two touchdowns by Plainview early in the first half, Sylvania responded just before entering the break with a nine-play drive capped off by a three-yard touchdown by Heath Shankles to bring the score within reach, 14-7.

Plainview, however, widened the gap again in the third on a two-yard score by Jordan Fee at the 4:40 mark. After pinning Sylvania deep within the Rams' territory on the ensuing kickoff, the Bears forced the Rams into a three-and-out situation. Following a punt return by Jesus Gonzales, Plainview took control of the football at their own 35-yard line and mounted an eight-play drive that extended into the final period. Gabe Graham, the Bears' starting quarterback, capped the march with a one-yard scoring run. The Rams, which added another TD on a 10-yard run by Devin Davis later in the fourth, wouldn't threaten the Bears' lead again.

"It was a big win for us," said Pruitt following the game. "It gives us bragging rights for a year. You have rivalries like this all over the South, and it always feels good to get a win in these types of games."

Plainview picked up 14 points in the first half on a five-yard scoring run by Jordan Fee in the first quarter and a 31-yard TD reception by Keenan Hodges from Graham in the second period.

Fee led Plainview with 181 yards rushing on 13 carries and 68 yards receiving on three catches. Graham closed with 15-of-24 passing for 188 yards and an additional 31 yards on the ground. Hodges finished with five receptions for 83 yards while Josh Kidd closed the game with 11 yards receiving on four grabs. Gonzales had three catches on the night.

Shankles led the Rams with 70 yards rushing on 14 carries. Dakota Patterson was 5-of-13 passing for 94 yards. Mark Patterson and Mason Akin combined for four receptions and 89 yards receiving. Chris Liles snagged one pass for Sylvania.

Blake Wigley and Kidd each had an interception for the Bears defensively. Will Ingle blocked a Rams' extra point try.

Mark Patterson led Sylvania's stop unit with 15 tackles. Preston Poe and Davis each had 13 takedowns each while Will Sparks added another 12 on the night.
