Valley Head football coach Heath Kirby was recommended to be promoted as the Assistant Principal at the school at the last Board of Education meeting.
The board voted 3-2 against the move, however.
Board members were under the impression that the position would be a temporary position, but Superintendent Charles Warren recommended the position be full-time.
Financially, the schools system is in a bind. A small school such as Valley Head may not have anyone in the Assistant Principal’s position next year.
The spending cuts being made would likely mean the Board would have to borrow funds just to finish out the school year.
In another personnel move, the board votes 3-2 to hire Miriam Moore as an elementary teacher at Geraldine School.
The board also heard a presentation of adding two teachers to the system. One as a school improvement specialist and another as a credit recovery teacher.
Both teachers would be funded with federal money.
Credit recovery has given the ability to students to recover a credit they failed to receive and graduate on time. Currently it is estimated that 300 students in county schools are enrolled in credit recovery, and teachers and administrators are not able to keep up with all of the students.
Before the Superintendent’s recommendations, the board recognized the Ider Varsity Cheerleaders for winning the 2A state championship and national championships.
Ider head football coach Brent Tinker was also honored as the AHSAA Class 2A Coach of the Year.
“I am a very blessed man to work with these kids,” said Tinker.
The Board will meet again on Feb. 9 in a regularly scheduled meeting at 5 p.m. A work session has been scheduled for March 11.
