Sylvania council makes peace

Published February 18, 2010

It seems that all is well in Sylvania.

Council members Tony Goolesby and Tom Miller, along with Mayor Mitchell Dendy came to an agreement to end the fighting that had been plaguing the town council meetings for the past month.

“Let me assure you that the city is moving forward,” said Dendy, “There are things being done, and they are being done right.”

Mayor Dendy says that revenue in the town is actually rising, rather than falling like most towns their size.

“In two months, we have taken in 50% of what we took in the last 12 months,” he said.

“The council agreed to move forward and to do what’s right for the citizens,” said Dendy.

Miller and Goolesby met privately after the council meeting and the two seemed to have worked their differences out.

Goolesby did, however, make mention of several statements that were missing from the minutes of the previous meeting by Councilman Miller, stating the minutes needed to be correct in the event of a possible legal issue. There is no indication there will be any legal action taking place, however.

Sylvania city attorney Jonathan Bell stepped down, and Pat Tate will replace Bell.

The council voted to pay off one fire truck at $20,000 and make a $7,000 payment on another. The street department can not do any work until the weather clears.

The next meeting will be held on Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m.
