JACKSONVILLE—After thrashing Ohatchee 77-61 in the 2A regional semifinals at Pete Mathews Coliseum, the No. 6-ranked Lady Bison will make their first run at a regional title since 1998-99.
NSM (26-6) never felt threatened in the contest, leading by as many as 30 points at one point.
Ohatchee (22-7) had no answer for the high-powered offense of NSM coach Michael Wilborn’s team.
The Lady Bison started the first quarter on fire and never looked back. Sharpshooter Chelsea Ellison connected on three treys in the opening period and Lauren Cummins scored seven to help the Lady Lions establish a 27-8 lead at the end of one quarter of play.
The second quarter started like the first one ended, with Ellison still on fire. Ellison connected on back-to-back 3-pointers as the Lady Bison extended its lead to 41-15 with 4:03 remaining in the half.
NSM led 47-21 at the intermission.
Ellison finished the first half with 20 points and handed off four assists.
Another big factor of the first half was North Sand Mountain’s relentless defense. Ohatchee committed 19 turnovers, compared to the Lady Bisons 6. Although the Lady Indians out rebounded NSM 47-40, Ohatchee only claimed 10 offensive boards, while NSM pulled down 19.
Ohatchee started the third as though they may have something left to challenge the Lady Bison with, but it was short-lived. After two quick Ohatchee baskets, NSM caught fire again and pushed the lead to 30.
NSM kept the lead above 20 until late in the game, when they were substituting freely.
Ellison finished as the game’s leading scorer with 28 points. She also handed off five assists.
Lacy Huckabee contributed 20 points and seven assists to the cause. Cummins added nine points and seven rebounds.
Laneshia Anderson led Ohatchee with 27 points and 17 rebounds.
North Sand Mountain will now face Section in the finals of the 2A regionals.
