Homemakers host annual awards banquet

Published February 18, 2010

The DeKalb County Council of the Alabama Homemakers and Community Leaders Association held their 2009 awards banquet last Thursday at the Geraldine United Methodist Church.

It was the third year the group has held their annual banquet at the church.

Many awards were given out, but it was easy to see that the reason for the banquet was to join together and fellowship among friends.

“We as homemakers love each other,” said DeKalb County President Sandy Sanders.

It is fitting that the banquet takes place near Valentine’s Day each year.

Geraldine UMC Pastor Tom Holt gave a brief devotion to begin the banquet and spoke from the Bible’s book of Luke, including the story of Mary and Martha taking Jesus into their home and Martha washing the feet of Jesus with her hair.

Awards were given out in six categories and a Club of the Year award, based on a points system.

Lookout Mountain won the citizenship and community outreach award. Geraldine took the Family Life award as well as the Environment award.

Tenbroek and Lookout Mountain tied in the Health category.

Ider won both the Home and Marketing categories.

Geraldine was chosen as Club of the Year, followed by Ider and Crossville.

Sanders made the statement, however, that, “DeKalb County is the real winner.”

Individual awards given included the President’s Appreciation Award and Women of the Year.

JoAnn Strickland, the state Vice-President, received the President’s Appreciation Award for her help and dedication.

“I don’t think I deserve it,” said Strickland, “I just do what I have to do.

“I am humbled by it,” she said.

Ider Woman of the Year Carolyn Cox was voted the DeKalb County Woman of the Year as well.

“All three of the voters I had chose her,” said Sanders, “She is just a wonderful person.”

“It’s just an honor to be nominated and to belong,” said Cox.

Entertainment for the event was provided by Nick Fike, a Southern Gospel singer who performs with Sherrill Neilson and Boys.

Christina Chamblee, a story reader, was the speaker for the event.

The association is open to married women of all ages, and the clubs are pillars of their respective communities.

Collectively, the DeKalb County Association gave 22,216 hours of their time in volunteering last year, with some hours not yet turned in.

There were around 2,200 items given away to the needy, as well as $7,743.

The group was also able to collect 200 pounds of coke can tabs for the Ronald McDonald house.
