Plainview outlasts Sylvania

Published October 1, 2009

The first half was nothing less than a slugfest, with both teams going toe-to-toe, neither backing down from the other. If you’re thinking this sounds like the typical Plainview and Sylvania match-up, you’re exactly right, as it ended with a 35-14 Bear win.

On the Rams' (3-2) opening possession, they executed the perfect hook-and-ladder play to take an apparent early lead only to have it brought back due to a penalty.

After swapping punts, the Rams' second drive was halted after the Bears covered a fumble.

Two plays later, Plainview’s Will Ingle broke loose for a 40-yard touchdown run with 5:49 left in the first quarter. Brandon Redman kicked the point after and the Bears led 7-0.

Sylvania answered back; Devin Davis got 19 yards on the drive's first play, then three plays later quarterback Zach King threw to Mason Akins for a 73-yard touchdown.

Josh Clayton tacked on the PAT to tie the score 7-7.

Later, King gave the Rams their only lead of the game when he dashed in from the 7-yard line, with only: 34 seconds left in the first quarter. Clayton once again kicked the extra point.

Plainview marched 66 yards in eight plays on its next drive to pull even after Jordan Fee bulled in from the 2-yard line and Redman toed the tying point.

Neither team could get much offense going for the remainder of the first half and they went into the locker room tied at 14-all.

“We knew going in, this game would be war,” said Plainview coach Dale Pruitt. “We responded well in the third quarter and played to our capabilities.”

The Bears came out in the third quarter and scored two touchdowns in less than two minutes.

Ingle got the first score of the second half, sprinting 35 yards for the touchdown.

Sylvania fumbled on its first play of the ensuing drive and Plainview covered on the 43-yard line. Two plays later, Ingle scored from 21 yards out.

Both of Redman’s extra-point attempts were good, putting Plainview on top 28-14.

With 7:22 left in the game, Plainview added its final score when Fee ran in from the 12-yard line.

Sylvania’s next drive ended when Colby Williams picked off an errant Ram pass.

Plainview ran out the clock, ending the game and sealing the victory.

Fee led all rushers with 105 yards. Ingle followed with 104 yards.

Freshman Cole Porter was 8-for-9 passing for 95 yards.

King led the Ram offense, going 13-for-25 for 198 yards, scoring one touchdown passing and one rushing.

Plainview travels to Guntersville this week and Sylvania will host Susan Moore.
